Finally, a Chair That’s Meant to Hug You Back

Summary: This revolutionary chair utilizes the calming effects of a hug to relax the body and mind.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Huggie Dougie chair, then it’s time the two you become acquainted. Designed by Doug Fertig, the Huggie Dougie contains expandable cushions that alleviate stress by gently hugging the user – or mimicking the feel of a hug.
Inspiration

According to Fertig, this project came about after writing two short stories that took place in 2075 and depicted a utopian and dystopian future. His goal, explore speculative design and consider the future impact of the Huggie Dougie chair on society.

How Does it Work?

The user starts by sitting in the chair, in which he or she activates an air compressor that inflates or deflates the custom cushion system. Once a comfortable level has been reached, the user then turns off the air compressor and stops the inflation process, leaving the cushions firmly entrenched in the personalized position.

When given a hug, most people will experience a sense of joy and comfort. However, it goes beyond the physical connection. It’s been proven that hugging releases hormones like Oxytocin and dopamine, reduces fear and panic, and lowers the heart rate. Similar to that of sleeping on a high-quality mattress that you’d purchase from popular manufacturers like your neighborhood superstore or The Foam Factory.

The Chemical Effect

Hugging releases certain hormones such as Oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin. Each of these play a role in the relaxation of the body as well as homeostasis. By performing such a simple feat as a hug, one can reduce stress and anxiety, create an enjoyable sensation, and lower the level of cortisol in the body – sounds like a recreational drug, right? Well, it’s been said that the effects of hugs run similar to that of a drug, only more natural.
