With the nominees of the American Music Awards being announced recently, it came as no surprise that Iggy Azalea, the newcomer of the year, is ahead of everyone else with six nominations. John Legend, Pharrell and Katy Perry are just behind her with five nominations each.1393279974_iggy_azalea_highsnobiety_007_17

Touted to be one of the biggest stars of 2014, Iggy has gained nominations such as New Artist of the Year, Artist of the Year, Single of the Year among a bunch of other specialized categories that place her in the rap/hip-hop section even though she is considered to be a pop/rock artist.

Apart from this, a few changes have been made to the American Music Awards format itself which include an increase in the number of nominees to several categories. In particular, Artist of the Year has ten slots instead of just five.

While the Grammys are determined by a body called the Recording Academy, the American Music Awards judge the winners based on sales and popularity. This is not very different from how the Billboard makes up its charts either.

Some of the factors that go into adjudging the winner include social media, sales, airplay and even online video streaming as well.

In other words, the AMAs is hardly a celebration of the best music made during the year but more of a popularity content these days.

For this purpose, voting can be carried out from anywhere since the awards have a site of their own while also allowing fans to vote using Twitter in using the hashtag #AMA as well as the nominee and category.

The winners for this year’s AMAs ceremony will be telecast live on ABC on November 23, 2014.
